School Food Nutrition
You Are What You Eat!
The National School Lunch Act was passed in 1946 in a effort to "safeguard the health and well-being of the nation's children and encourage the domestic consumption of nutritious agriculturall commodities and other food." In 1999 the program name was changed to the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Program in honor of the late Georgia senator who had been instrumental in sponsoring the original bill.
The School Food and Nutrition Program is administered on the federal level by the United States Department of Agriculture. The responsibility for administering the school lunch program in individual states is delegated to the State Department of Education.
